Head Coach - Paul Mokha
Coach Mokha is the head coach of MRC, overseeing and assisting the entire coaching staff. Paul was the Head Men’s coach for three seasons at UCLA, 2006-2009. During that period the Bruins Varsity had a .78 winning percentage with the Varsity 8 twice finishing second at the San Diego Crew classic and the Varsity 4 placing 5th & 6th at the IRA Championships. The team showed great growth in that time and placed 4th in team points at the 2008 ACRA Championships. Mokha earned the 2008 ACRA West Coast Region Coach of the Year award.
Coach Mokha came to UCLA from Barry University in Miami, FL where he was the Head Women's Coach for eight seasons. In that time he guided the program to three Sunshine State Conference Championships and four trips to the NCAA Championships with a second place finish at the 2006 National Championship regatta. His varsity 8 won back to back Dad Vail Regatta Championships in 2005 & 2006. Coach Mokha was named the 2006 CRCA National Coach of the Year and 2006 Sunshine State Conference Coach of the year.
Prior to coaching at Barry, Paul served as an assistant coach for the US Women's National team in San Diego, CA in 1997-98. He assisted in the selection and preparation of crews for the World Championships and coached the Open Women's four without coxswain to a fourth place finish at the 1997 World Championships.
Mokha was the women’s varsity coach at the University of Miami from 1994-1997 and novice coach in ‘93 & ‘94. At Miami, he coached several crews to championships in Florida, Southern Regional and Dad Vail Regattas. During his career he has also coached at the Vesper Rowing Club in Philadelphia working with the elite men and lightweight women.
A native of Philadelphia, PA. who grew up in Erie, PA., Mokha was a coxswain for the US National Team and competed at the World Championships three times. He also won the Henley Royal Regatta in England in 1994 and competed at the World University Games in 1989. He is a graduate of Temple University where he earned three varsity letters and helped lead the Owls to two Dad Vail Championships and a bronze medal at the IRA Regatta.
Paul is married to Cleveland, OH native Monique Mokha PH.D. Monique is a professor of Sports Medicine/Biomechanics. They have a nine year old son, Sanjay and a two year old daughter named Jespreet.
Varsity Men's Coach - Andy Parrish
Coach Andy is in his third year as Men's Varsity Coach. He brings considerable rowing and coaching experience to the MRC Youth Program, and led a dedicated group of Varsity rowers last year to impressive performances at the USRowing National Championships. His commitment to the success of the rowers is only surpassed by his dedication to their development as oarsmen and young men. Rowing 1961-66 St. Andrew’s School, DE. Sculling Coach - César Herrera López
•Participated on Cuban National Rowing Team in 3 Pan-American Games, 2 Olympic, 2 Central American and Caribbean Games, plus various international competitions. •Master Degree in Physical Education, Recreation and Sports, Physical Culture Sport Institute, Havana, Cuba •Eleven years as Rowing Coach in Cuba. Several Pan-American Champions in Men’s Lightweight. Coached at World Championships, World University Games and various international competitions. •Workshop in Sport and Physical Education (Inter Regional Center for International School in North Caroline University) •Principals Training Center: Group Dynamics for Leadership(Miami) •Two years as Director of National Rowing Team in Guatemala, managing the technical development of the team. •Eleven years as Department Head of Physical Education, including the development of Standards and Benchmarks for grades K-12 and the introduction of the Presidential Fitness Awards. •Physical Education, Clubs and Athletic Director of K-12 at the American School of Guatemala. •Educational/Administrative leadership positions in two countries, including Head of Physical Education/sports Committee for accreditation through New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
Assistant Women's Coach - Laura Bracken
Coach Laura Bracken was at the helm of the Novice Men's squad from 2007 to 2009, and has coached her crews to first place finishes at the Regional Championship level. She is now the assistant women's coach, working with the first year rowers and coxswains at MRC. Rowing Experience: •USRowing Level II coaching certification •Episcopal Academy 1997-2000 and Penn State University 2000-2001 Athletic Endeavors: •Full and Half Marathon runner - Walt Disney World 2006, 2007, 2008 •Trained in ballet and tap dance Education: •BS in Biology from Penn State University •MA in Marine Affairs and Policy from University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science
Assistant Men's Coach - Paul Scheller
Rowing Experience: •University of Miami 1988: Rowed lightweight crew under Joe “Okie” O’Connor •Head Coach MAST Academy 2002 thru 2006 •US Rowing Level II Certification •Coached MRC Intermediate Program 2006, Women's Novice 2007-2008, •Assistant Women's Varsity 2008-2009, and presently coaches the first year men at MRC. Athletic Endeavors: •Competitive Triathlete in sprint, Olympic and Half Iron Distances •Member of Kanalui Outrigger Club -raced from Bimini to Miami •XC Mountain Biker won 3rd overall in class 2006, 12 hr racing team •Experienced sailor in Etchells, J24, and cruising class. •Marathon runner-NY and Marine Corps, Miami half marathon
